“Human Rights Start with Community Actions towards Them”

Within the framework of the European Union’s funded project ‘Improving Democratic Accountability in Palestinian camps’, Nabaa Organization - Development Action Without Borders - in partnership with the Children and Youth Centre Shatila and the Women’s Humanitarian Organization organized a conference entitled “Human Rights Start with Community Actions towards Them” on the on 30th January.
The conference focused on the current situation facing refugees, in particular young people and the role of duty bearers in improving their lives.
It also aimed to serve as an advocacy tool to promote a greater engagement from governmental duty bearers with local communities advocating for their rights. The conference was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Interior, the European Union, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), as well as Lebanese and Palestinian organizations.
The main issue discussed in the working papers included the rights of young drug addicts to treatment and the human rights situation of Palestinian refugees from Syria.
General Director Mr. Qassem Saad, introduced by Executive Director Mr. Yasser Dawoud, delivered a speech during the conference. This was followed by a speech from Mr. Samir Gharbaoui, Programme Manager at the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon.
Finally the conference ended with group work on the main issues that constitute an advocacy campaign led by youth, popular committees and other key people in the best interests of youth and communities.
